Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
HeatShield Chimney Inspection in San Antonio: What to Know First
We provide independent HeatShield chimney inspection in San Antonio, typically completing the full camera inspection and written report the same day we’re on site. A standard HeatShield-specific inspection runs between $189 and $329 depending on the level of inspection your situation calls for, and you’ll always receive a written price before any work begins. If you own a HeatShield liner or HeatShield Cerfractory repair and want an honest assessment of its condition, call (361) 491-3153 and we’ll walk you through what to expect.

How HeatShield Products Fail – and How We Fix Them
HeatShield is a well-known name in chimney repair, and we inspect a lot of it across San Antonio homes. That said, the product has specific failure patterns we see repeatedly, and knowing them matters when you’re trying to figure out whether a liner or coating is still doing its job. Here are the five most common HeatShield-related findings from our inspections:
- Cerfractory flue sealant delamination in older single-flue applications. The HeatShield Cerfractory material gets applied as a resurfacing treatment inside existing flue tiles, and in San Antonio’s summer heat plus winter fire cycles, we occasionally see it begin to separate at the tile joints. This shows up on camera as a thin gap or hairline crack right where two flue tiles meet. The fix usually involves cleaning the affected area and reapplying the material, but we always show you the camera footage before recommending anything so you can see exactly what we’re seeing.
- Stainless steel HeatShield liner joint separation at the first elbow. HeatShield’s stainless liner systems work, but like any liner, the joints are the vulnerable points. In two-story San Antonio homes with offset flues, the first elbow above the firebox takes the most thermal stress. Our camera inspections have caught joint gaps there even when the rest of the liner looks fine. We repair these with proper mechanical fastening and verify the fix with a post-repair camera pass.
- Improper HeatShield installation over un-repaired flue damage. This is the one we genuinely get frustrated about. HeatShield’s product specifications call for the underlying flue to be prepped correctly before the Cerfractory is applied. When a previous contractor skips that step, the coating fails early. We regularly find this in San Antonio homes where a resurfacing was done years ago and the original cracks were never addressed. Our inspection documents the root cause, not just the symptom, so you understand what a durable fix actually requires.
- Water intrusion at the crown that undermines the HeatShield system from the top down. No liner or coating product survives a cracked crown or missing rain cap. In San Antonio, we get intense rain bursts in spring and fall, and a compromised crown lets water run down the outside of the flue line. That moisture eventually reaches the HeatShield material from behind, causing what looks like spalling or flaking. The fix is always crown repair first, then addressing any HeatShield damage – never the other way around.
- Creosote bonding issues on HeatShield Cerfractory surfaces. The Cerfractory finish has a slightly textured surface compared to smooth stainless, which means creosote can adhere a bit differently. We see more third-degree creosote surface buildup on Cerfractory-lined flues than on smooth stainless in San Antonio homes that burn a lot of unseasoned oak or mesquite. The inspection includes measuring that creosote thickness, because a HeatShield surface still needs mechanical removal at the right intervals.

Our HeatShield Chimney Inspection Process
Every HeatShield inspection we do in San Antonio follows the same careful sequence, so you know exactly what to expect from the moment we schedule the call to the moment we hand you the report:
- 1
You call (361) 491-3153. A live person answers, day or night. We ask about your chimney’s history, what you’ve noticed, and whether any previous HeatShield work was done. We then give you a written price for the inspection before we ever step foot in your home.
- 2
We protect your home first. Shoe covers and drop cloths go down before any tools come out. We ask about pets and kids, and we use quiet tools where we can. Nothing gets moved without asking.
- 3
Visual and camera inspection of the full flue. Danny Cortes runs the camera from the firebox up through the flue, watching the HeatShield surfaces at every joint and transition. He sketches what he sees, and he’ll walk you through the footage so you’re never taking our word for it.
- 4
Specific diagnosis for HeatShield issues. If we find a problem, we tell you plainly whether it’s a warranty-eligible concern, a repairable joint or crack, or something that needs a replacement liner. We never recommend a full replacement when a targeted repair will do the job.
- 5
Written quote for any needed work. Before any repair starts, you get a written price. No pressure, no on-the-spot decisions. You choose what happens next.
- 6
Post-inspection clean-up and report. We photograph the clean-up before we leave and send you a written report with the camera images. Every job carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right.

AfterWhat HeatShield Chimney Inspection Costs in San Antonio
We believe in telling you the price before we show up, and that applies to HeatShield inspections as much as anything else. Here’s what you can expect in San Antonio:
- Level 1 inspection (no known issues, annual check): $189 – $229
- Level 2 inspection with full camera (real estate, after storms, or if you’ve had a chimney fire): $289 – $329
- Level 3 inspection (we suspect hidden damage behind walls or masonry): Quoted on site after the Level 2 findings, but we’ll tell you the number before any exploratory work starts
What moves the price: roof access difficulty, flue height, whether we need to remove a chimney cap, and whether previous HeatShield work needs documentation pulled from the interior. You’ll always get the exact number in writing before we begin, and our estimates are free. Call (361) 491-3153 to get yours.
Why San Antonio Homeowners Call Kindling Chimney San Antonio for HeatShield Work
We’ve served San Antonio families for years, from quiet ranch-style homes in Alamo Heights to older properties near the Pearl district. Our technicians are background-checked, uniformed, and trained on the HeatShield system specifically – which matters, because a HeatShield job is not the same as a generic chimney job. When you call us for a HeatShield inspection, you get someone who can name the product lines, spot the failure modes, and tell you honestly whether the repair is worth doing or the liner has lived its life.

We also install and service DuraFlex and Gelco products, so if your HeatShield system needs a liner replacement and another brand is the better fit for your situation, we can give you an honest comparison rather than a sales pitch for whatever we happen to stock. And every visit is covered by the Cedarwell Care Promise: shoe covers, drop cloths, a written price before work starts, and a photo of the clean-up before we leave. We do that on every job, without being asked.
As an independent HeatShield service provider, we’re not affiliated with the manufacturer, which means we answer to you, not to a corporate warranty program. That’s the way it should be.
FAQs
No. A camera inspection is non-invasive and doesn’t alter the HeatShield product in any way, so it won’t void your manufacturer’s warranty. In fact, if we document a defect that falls under warranty coverage, you’ll have the camera evidence to support a claim. We’ll help you understand what we found and how to approach the manufacturer if needed.
In most weeks, we can get a HeatShield inspection scheduled within a few days, and in some cases we can work you in sooner. The inspection itself takes about 60 to 90 minutes, and you’ll have the written report and camera images before we leave. Call (361) 491-3153 and we’ll give you the next available opening.
You’ll know because we’ll show you the camera footage and explain exactly what we’re seeing. A small joint gap or hairline crack is often repairable. Widespread delamination, significant water damage behind the material, or liner joints that have opened up in multiple places usually point toward replacement. We don’t recommend replacement unless the evidence is on the screen in front of you.
Yes. We work with DuraFlex and Gelco as well, and if your San Antonio home has a different liner brand, we can inspect and service that too. The process is the same: camera inspection first, written diagnosis second, and no repair without your go-ahead and a written price.
Call us. One of the most common calls we get from San Antonio homeowners is a second-opinion inspection after a previous repair didn’t feel right. Our camera inspection will document what’s actually inside your flue, and we’ll give you an honest read on whether the previous work is holding up. If it’s fine, we’ll tell you it’s fine. If it’s not, we’ll show you precisely where and why. Estimates are free.
