Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide

If your DuraFlex chimney system has a failed cap or crown-mounted termination, we stock and install DuraFlex-compatible caps in San Antonio at a typical installed price of $260 to $640, depending on the specific model, the flue size, and how accessible your roof is. Most installations take about two hours from setup to final photo, and we can usually get you on the schedule within a few days. The way most San Antonio homeowners discover their DuraFlex cap has failed is simple: rain shows up in the firebox, or for gas systems, visible rust streaking appears on the chase top after a big storm.

We’re an independent San Antonio chimney service provider and not affiliated with DuraFlex directly. We choose to stock their parts because the stainless steel holds up to what Texas weather throws at it: hard sun in August, sudden hail in March, and the damp, sulfur-heavy air that drifts up from the south side. Danny Cortes, our owner, has handled enough DuraFlex systems across San Antonio to know exactly which cap fits which flue without guesswork.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes a few distinct termination styles, and matching the right cap to the right system is where a lot of installations go sideways. The three we see most often in San Antonio:

  • DuraFlex 304/316 liner caps: for flexible stainless liners running up an existing masonry flue. These clamp directly to the liner with a draw band, and the cap size is dictated by the liner’s inside diameter, almost always 6, 7, or 8 inches in this market.
  • DuraFlex Pro / Connect tee caps: for through-the-wall or exterior chase installations. These mount to the tee snout and need a storm collar that drains correctly, and that drainage detail matters more in San Antonio than most installers admit because our freeze-thraw cycles will tear a poorly bedded storm collar loose within two winters.
  • DuraFlex CrownPro chase covers with integrated cap: for prefab chase systems where the cap and chase pan work as one unit. When the pan rusts through, you’re not replacing a $90 cap; you’re replacing the whole lid, which is why the price range is wider on this line.

How to identify what you have: look for a small embossed stamp or adhesive label near the cap’s base or on the underside of the lid. DuraFlex stamps the alloy grade (304 or 316) and often the model line right into the metal. If that label is gone, measure the inside diameter of the flue tile at the top; a 6-inch ID takes a 6-inch cap, and mixing that up is the single most common reason a newly installed cap leaks or rattles. For OEM versus aftermarket, our position is straightforward: on a DuraFlex liner system, the OEM cap is designed to clamp to the DuraFlex corrugation profile exactly. A generic aftermarket draw-band cap can work on straight pipe, but on corrugated liners it frequently won’t seat evenly, and we’ve redone enough of those in San Antonio to simply stock the OEM part on the truck.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Water in the firebox after rain. This is the number one call we get in San Antonio after a summer monsoon. It usually means the cap’s rain skirt or the storm collar has shifted, or the mesh band has pulled free of the lid allowing water to ride the liner wall down instead of shedding onto the chimney crown.
  • Rust streaks on the chase top or the cap’s base ring. DuraFlex 304 stainless is good but not rust-proof, especially within ten miles of the coast or anywhere irrigation overspray hits the cap regularly. The streaks appear long before the cap actually fails, and catching them early saves the chase pan underneath.
  • Debris inside the firebox or smoke chamber. A torn or displaced mesh spark arrestor lets leaves, twigs, and the occasional grackle nest into the flue. You’ll see twigs at the damper or hear a dry rattle of leaf litter when you open the damper.
  • A cap that rattles or turns in the wind. San Antonio’s spring windstorms are a real durability test. A loose draw band or a missing storm collar setscrew will let the cap spin, which works the seal open and invites rain in slowly, often without anyone noticing until the liner or smoke shelf shows rust staining.
  • Visible daylight or water beads between the flue tile and the cap base. If you can see a gap from the roof or with binoculars, the cap’s base is no longer sealing. For a gas fireplace, this is also where CO and moisture mix, and that’s one we like to resolve sooner rather than later.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard DuraFlex liner cap replacement in San Antonio, expect an installed price between $260 and $420. That includes the exact OEM or proven-equivalent part, a full inspection of the liner top, storm collar, and crown seal, and the installation itself. If we’re installing a full CrownPro chase cover with integrated cap, the range runs $480 to $640, because the part is larger, the old pan has to be removed and resealed, and we always inspect the chase framing before setting the new lid.

What drives the price upward: roof pitch and access. A single-story walkable roof in Alamo Heights is faster than a steep two-story in Stone Oak where we set up fall protection and take more time. We keep the cost predictable by writing you a flat price before any work begins, so there’s no surprise line item at the end. Every DuraFlex cap installation carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap leaks, shifts, or fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.

Job type Installed range
DuraFlex liner cap, standard 6-8 inch $260 – $420
CrownPro chase cover with integrated cap $480 – $640
Storm collar or draw band repair only $90 – $160
Full liner-cap inspection with photos $49, waived when we do the install

All of that includes the Cedarwell Care Promise: shoe covers and drop cloths on arrival, a written price before we touch the chimney, and a photo of the clean-up before we leave. Danny Cortes still walks every DuraFlex cap job with the homeowner when he’s on site, and every tech on our crew follows the same rule: you see what we see before we start.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely do this yourself: inspect from the ground with binoculars, take photos of the label stamps, and clear debris from the visible cap crown if it’s within reach without leaving a ladder. Those checks tell us a lot before we arrive. Where DIY goes wrong on DuraFlex systems is the moment it involves roof access. The draw band on a liner cap needs to be torqued evenly against the corrugated liner wall; too loose and the cap spins, too tight and you deform the liner crown and create a leak path. The storm collar setscrews on a Pro or Connect tee have to thread into pilot holes in the pipe, and cross-threading one means replacing the tee snout, not the screw. And on any roof in San Antonio, a slipped foot or a dropped tool through the decking costs more than the cap ever will.

If the cap is loose, leaking, or you’re simply not sure which part you’re looking at, call us at (361) 491-3153. We’ll confirm the cap model from your photos, bring the right part, and finish the job the same day we arrive.
