Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
We install Copperfield chimney caps in San Antonio for $310 – $540, depending on cap size, chase height, and roof accessibility. That’s the installed price, parts and labor together. Most owners discover their cap has failed after a rainstorm pushes water down the flue, or when they spot rust streaking the siding below the chimney chase.

Copperfield caps are built with a stainless steel or copper hood over a galvanized or stainless screen mesh, and in San Antonio’s climate, the failure point is rarely the hood itself. It’s the mesh. Hail, intense sun cycling, and the moisture that lingers after our spring storm fronts break down the mesh first, which then lets birds and squirrels through. Once that happens, the cap isn’t doing its job even if it still looks fine from the ground.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield’s chimney cap line spans three main groups: the standard single-flue caps (CFC series), the multi-flue caps (CFM series), and the custom chase-top caps built for prefabricated fireplace chases. If your cap was installed with the home and the house was built after the mid-1990s in San Antonio, you’re most likely working with the CFC or CFM line. Prefab chase homes in areas like Stone Oak, Alamo Ranch, and the Dominion almost always use the chase-top design instead.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: your Copperfield cap isn’t matched to the cap brand, it’s matched to your flue tile dimensions. A CFC cap sized for an 8″×8″ clay flue won’t fit a 13″×13″ flue, regardless of what the label on the old cap says. Before we order anything, we measure the flue opening and the crown area with a tape, not a guess. And honestly, if a Copperfield cap is what’s there and it’s failed, we’ll match the replacement to the dimensions first and the brand second. Aftermarket caps built to the same spec often carry a longer mesh warranty than a direct OEM replacement, and we stock both.
We’re an independent chimney service company in San Antonio, not affiliated with Copperfield the manufacturer. What that means for you is we’ll tell you when a Copperfield OEM part is the better call and when a like-for-like aftermarket equivalent gets you the same fit for less. You’ll see both options before you decide.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water streaks on the ceiling or wall near the fireplace. This usually means the cap’s hood has shifted or the sealant around the cap base has cracked, letting rain track down the flue.
- Rust trails on the exterior chase or siding below the cap. The cap’s base flashing or the mesh frame is corroding, and that rust is washing down the exterior in our San Antonio rain season.
- You hear scratching or chirping in the flue. A torn or corroded mesh is an open door for chimney swifts, which are protected and cannot be removed until they leave on their own. Once they’re gone, the cap has to be replaced to keep them out next season.
- Strong fireplace odor in the house, especially in spring. A failed cap mesh lets humid outside air cycle into the flue, where it mixes with creosote, and the smell backs up into your living room.
- The cap is visibly leaning or no longer centered on the flue. The mounting bracket has corroded or the cap took a direct hit from a hail stone. A leaning cap is one storm away from blowing clear off the roof.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Antonio, a standard Copperfield-style single-flue cap installation runs $310 – $410. Multi-flue caps run $380 – $540. If your home uses a prefab chase-top, the installed replacement runs $420 – $540, including the new chase pan, which is usually the real source of the leak, not the cap itself.
Every price we quote includes the cap, any mounting bracket or chase pan needed, removal and disposal of the old cap, sealing with a high-temperature silicone rated for exterior use, and a photo report showing the before and after. We hand you a written price before any work begins, and that’s the number on the invoice when we’re done. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if the cap leaks or shifts within a year, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. You can safely inspect from the ground with binoculars: look for mesh tears, rust seams, and a cap that’s no longer level. You can also safely check your attic after a heavy rain for damp insulation near the flue chase. What you shouldn’t do is climb onto a San Antonio roof with a 25-pound cap under one arm, especially on a two-story homes where our summer sun has baked roof shingles brittle. One slip on a steep pitch isn’t worth saving a few hundred dollars.
The installation itself requires getting the bracket anchored to the flue tile or chase without cracking the crown, then sealing it so it doesn’t become the new leak point. If the old cap was screwed in and the screws have stripped the tile, that needs a repair, not a bigger screw. Call us at (361) 491-3153 and we’ll handle it the same day, with a written price you’ll see before we start.
FAQs
On a single-story home with partial tree cover, expect 8 – 12 years from a Copperfield cap in San Antonio’s climate. On a two-story exposed roof, hail and sun cycling cut that to 5 – 8 years, and it’s almost always the mesh or the screws that fail before the hood does. A haboob-season dust layer plus spring hail is rough on anything that lives on a Texas roof.
If the hood is sound and the leak is only at the sealant line, yes, we can reseal it and replace the mesh in some cases. But if the mesh has torn away from the frame or the mounting bracket is corroded, the repair won’t hold through the next storm, and you’ll be back on the roof in six months. Call us and we’ll tell you which situation you have before we sell you anything.
From ladder to clean-up, a standard single-flue cap swap takes 45 – 75 minutes. A chase-top replacement with a new pan takes closer to two hours. We walk the home first, set down drop cloths inside, and when the crew leaves you’ll have a photo of the clean-up and a receipt for the price we quoted before the first tool came out.
We stock the most common sizes for standard 8×8, 8×13, and 13×13 flues in our San Antonio service vehicles, plus a few multi-flue sizes. If your chase requires a custom pan or a specialty cap, we measure on-site and schedule the install for a few days later. Danny Cortes will show you the flue sketch he draws and talk through the fit before ordering anything.
