Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation: The San Antonio Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Olympia Chimney-compatible chimney caps in San Antonio, and most replacements run between $185 and $420 installed, depending on the cap size and the condition of the flue crown it sits on. The part itself is usually on our truck or a day away, so we generally complete the swap the same visit. Most San Antonio homeowners find out their Olympia cap is done when they notice water staining the ceiling near the chimney chase, or when they hear birds in the flue on a quiet Saturday morning. The steel or copper cap that once kept rain, sparks, and animals out has quietly rusted through, or the mounting brackets have loosened in years of Hill Country wind and hard sun.

If that sounds familiar, we can help you match the right cap to your Olympia Chimney setup without guessing. And yes, we will show you the price in writing before any work starts.
Which Olympia Chimney Models This Applies To
Olympia Chimney builds a fairly broad catalog, but in San Antonio we mostly see two situations on existing homes: the round factory-built chase tops on pre-fabricated fireplace systems, or a galvanized or stainless cap sized to a masonry flue tile. The cap has to match both the outside diameter of the flue and the way the old one attached, either clamped to round pipe, screwed into the top of a chase pan, or slip-fitted over a clay tile. Measure the outside dimension of the existing cap, not the inside opening, because that is the number the replacement must match. An Olympia cap for a 7-inch flue is not the same as one for a 7.5-inch pipe, and that half-inch mismatch is the most common reason a well-meaning weekend replacement ends up wobbling loose by spring.
OEM Olympia caps are well made and worth using where the original lasted a long time. That said, we also keep quality aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Copperfield on the truck for straightforward sizes, and they often land at a better price for the same stainless lifespan. The decision comes down to how the old cap failed. If the base is still sound and only the mesh or rain hood oxidized, an aftermarket cap may be perfectly suitable. If the mounting ring has deformed or the chase pan itself needs repair, OEM fitment becomes more valuable.
Kindling Chimney San Antonio is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with Olympia Chimney. We stock Olympia-compatible parts and know how they install, because we work with them regularly, along with components from DuraFlex, HeatShield, and the brands named above.

Signs Your Olympia Chimney Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Water staining on the ceiling or wall around the chimney chase. When a cap’s rain hood rusts through or the mounting seam opens up, San Antonio’s sudden downpours send water straight down the flue and into the chase interior. You will usually see the stain first after a hard spring storm.
- Bird chirping or rustling in the chimney. The spark mesh and bird screen deteriorate faster than the hood, especially near the coast with Galveston humidity pushing inland. Once the mesh opens, a chimney becomes a nesting cavity, and we have pulled everything from starlings to grackle nests out of San Antonio flues.
- Spark escape at night. If you stand outside during a burn and see small embers popping out above the cap, the mesh is gone in at least one section. That is a real fire risk in dry winters, especially on the north side where oak leaves pile up on roofs.
- A loose cap that rattles in high wind. The Hill Country gets sustained wind that works mounting hardware back and forth over time. A cap that clicks or rattles is ten or fifteen heat cycles away from lifting off entirely, and a cap flying off mid-storm can take shingles with it.
- Visible rust bleeding onto the chase top or crown. Orange streaks running down from the cap base mean the galvanized coating has given out and the steel underneath is thinning. Once streaking starts, the cap usually has one more San Antonio summer, at best.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Most standard Olympia Chimney cap replacements in San Antonio run between $185 and $420 installed. The cap alone typically lands between $80 and $220 depending on size and material, and the rest is a service call to remove the old cap, clean the mounting surface, inspect the chase top or crown, install the new cap, and seal it correctly. Stainless steel sits at the upper end of the range but buys you twenty-plus years in Texas weather. Galvanized is cheaper up front and generally fine on a well-sealed chase pan, but it will not outlive the roof. Copper is a premium option we quote case by case.
Every install includes a written price before any work begins, the cap itself, proper mechanical attachment, and a high-temperature sealant on any penetration points. The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap loosens or the seal fails within a year, we come back and make it right at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
What a homeowner can safely do is read the numbers off the old cap, take a photo of the flue opening from the roofline or a second-story window, and check the visible condition of the chase pan from ground level with binoculars. That gives us enough to ballpark the part and tell you honestly whether it needs a ladder or a lift. What gets tricky fast is the removal itself. These caps are on the roof, often at a second-story height, and the old fasteners are frequently rust-welded in place. Twisting hard on a stuck cap is how we have seen homeowners rake shingles off or bend a flue pipe out of round. Working on a roofline above a chimney chase is not a place for an improvised approach. If the flue is on the second story or the roof pitch is steep, call us at (361) 491-3153 and let us bring the right tie-offs and tools.
FAQs
Most galvanized Olympia caps last 8 to 12 years in San Antonio, while stainless versions commonly last 20 years or more. The Texas sun breaks down galvanized coatings faster than they degrade in cooler, wetter climates, so the hood and mesh will need replacement even if the base is still usable.
Usually not. If the mesh is torn or the hood has rusted through, patch work on a chimney cap is rarely worth the labor cost compared to a new cap sized correctly. The exception is a loose mounting band that has not yet corroded, which we can often tighten and reseal during the same visit.
Most single-cap replacements take 30 to 60 minutes from ladder up to ladder down, assuming the roof is accessible and the existing hardware comes off cleanly. If the chase pan or crown needs repair around the flue, we will tell you before we do it, with the added cost in writing.
We stock common Olympia-compatible sizes in 6, 7, 8, and 9-inch diameters, along with aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Copperfield. If your cap is a non-standard size or a specific Olympia series, it is usually one business day away from our parts supplier.
